Welcome to So Danca's Elektra Tech, where tradition meets technology. After 200 years of tradition, So Danca marries aesthetics with engineering, with two new pointe shoe models - Joy II and Alegria.

Joy II is designed for the Greek or Egyptian shaped foot with longer toes. It is wider through the metatarsals and tapered through the toes, and offers full coverage for those dancers needing a higher vamp. It has long wings and a supportive box. Dancers with average or shorter toes should consider Alegria.

Both models are made with a stretch canvas lining, micro-suede sole (making it completely vegan), soft heel cup, foot enveloping foam inside the box, and an elastic drawstring secured at the Achilles.

What sets the Joy II and Alegria Pointe Shoes apart however is the built-in Elektra Tech technology, the first-ever usage of interchangeable, thermoplastic shanks! This provides a number of benefits:

Customization - Interchangeable shanks, of different strengths, allow the dancer to control the support of each foot. Shank strength can vary between feet. It can be customized for different variations or performances. It can be adjusted to help with injury recovery, or increased as the dancer grows in strength and ability. It makes these shoes appropriate for those new to pointe all the way to professional ballerinas. From barre to center and Giselle to Paquita, Elektra Tech has you covered!

Durability - Elektra Tech offers durability that cannot be achieved with a traditional shoe. There is no break-in or break-down period, and your shoes will be ready to dance immediately. That means the peak of pointe perfection (that precise moment when we love our shoes) is much longer - in fact, you will experience it the moment you put on the shoes and maintain it until you have to get a new pair. When does that happen? When you think the satin is no longer swan worthy, it will be time to replace your Elektra Techs. Even at that point, you will still have the same support that you always had.

The box is also reinforced around the metatarsals, which means no more knuckling! Because the box and shank housing are also made of a durable (yet flexible) thermoplastic material, you can expect the shape and feel to last much longer as well.

Injury Prevention - With no break-in period, Elektra Tech shoes take the stress off of your body by being immediately able to roll through demi-pointe. Your feet do the work and build strength (always the best injury prevention around!) but your metatarsals and instep are supported by a box and shank housing that won't break down.

The Joy II Pointe Shoes require selection of your choice of Shank (additional shanks sold separately) and Ring (additional rings also sold separately):

Shank - There are 4 shank strengths - Flex, Firm, Ultra Firm, and Super Ultra Firm. There are also 4 reinforcement lengths - O (none), I (45%), III (55%), V (75%) and X (full). Choose the combination that best meets your needs, or purchase additional shanks to use for different purposes. They can easily be interchanged!

So Danca Elektra Shanks

As a starting point consider the Firm III shank which is a medium strength shank that arches about halfway up the foot. Adjust from there if you want it to be stronger or more flexible, or if you want the arch to hit higher or lower.

Ring - The Ring provides even more support, helps hug the shoe to the foot even better, and also helps prevent twisting. Size 4 is by far the most common ring size. Very large feet might consider size 5, and smaller feet might consider size 3. Tiny feet only should consider size 2 or 1.

Updated Review

Update: The lower paragraph is my original review, which was 100% true to my experience at the time I wrote it. Unfortunately, my experience after writing that review was very different. After retiring my first pair, I wore out 3 more pair in the same amount of time I had worn the first pair. All three wore out in the same way, they began to stretch out across the joint, right where the shoe bends as you roll up and down. One pair actually ripped where the satin attaches to the suede outsole, like literally the materials separated creating a hole. The next 2 pair also wore out in the same area, though I didn't push them to the point of actually separating. As the shoe wore out, it no longer supported my foot and I started sinking and knuckling, which makes it very difficult to balance and pirouettes are a disaster. After realizing that my 4th pair was dead to the point I was having issues rolling back down from a balance because I was badly knuckled after exactly 29 days since I sewed it, I decided to return to my previous make and model because it seems that the first pair lasting so long was just a fluke, and they actually are not going to save me any money. Considering staying in this shoe cost as much as my previous pair, there is no reason to stick with this shoe because the width of the box actually did make turning noticeably more difficult than my previous shoes which had a smaller platform. I'm not going to say this shoe isn't a great option for some people, it just didn't work out long term for me.

I am very happy with these shoes. I switched to Joy II in January and my first pair lasted until June, when I got a new pair for performance as the first pair was used over 100 hours and was filthy, stained and yucky from all the oil and sweat absorbing into the lining over time. I could continue to use the first pair as they are not dead, but rather are just too dirty and feel gross. After trying several shanks in the first month, I found my best shank for each foot (I'm a bit asymmetrical) and I have saved at least $400 if not more on pointe shoes in the last 6 months thanks to switching to this shoe. It's not the most flattering shoe I've ever had, but it more than makes up for that in longevity, especially for a non-professional dancer.

LOVE

I love these shoes. I have a really wide foot. You wouldn't realize it to look at it but when you put a pointe shoe on, forget it. My metatarsals don't angle down like most feet, they go straight across, so when on point you can imagine the pressure that puts on my foot. If I can't get into a shoe, all my weight is being supported by that width, rather than the whole foot or toes. I have tried them all, and this is the only shoe for me. And I like the softer shank, it really gives my foot a workout and keeps them strong. So glad Dance Supplies carries this brand, it can be harder to find. If you need a wide shoe and haven't had any luck try the Joy II. You'll probably love it too.
